Jessica Marter-Kenyon
Jessica Marter-Kenyon is a PhD student in the Geography Department at UCSB. Her research interests include: human adaptation to environmental change in low-income countries (with an emphasis on climate-induced migration), critical development studies, and political ecology.
 
Her dissertation project at UCSB investigates climate change and its role in migration and population displacement amongst smallholder farmers in rural Rwanda and Burundi. She uses mixed methods- including GIS, statistical modeling, and interviews- in support of this research.
 
Jessica received her BA in Development Studies in 2007 from the University of California, Berkeley and her MSc in Environment and Development in 2010 from the London School of Economics and Political Science. Her MSc thesis explores planned population resettlement in the context of climate change and can be found here:

Since 2012, Jessica has been an editorial board member of the peer-reviewed Journal of Environment and Development; from 2014-2016 she served as its Managing Editor.

Jessica has presented her research at the annual meetings of the American Association of Geographers (2013 and 2017) and the Population Association of America (2017), at the University of California Global Health Day (2014) and at the 8th Summer Institute on Migration and Health (2013). She also received funding from the Broom Center, the UC Center of Expertise on Migration and Health (COEMH), and the CU Population Center to attend workshops on environmental demography, and migration and health during the summer of 2013.
